The Beggar

It was once that I was driving back from office in evening in Delhi.
I was stuck at Ashram traffic jam. There at the window I saw a lean frame of a man in 40s with a very dirty outfit, a haggard unkempt look, peeping in through my window.
I was kind of aghast at his penury as it was winter time and he was not wearing any woolens.
I bowed before him and then gave him the alm.I always do this.
He was shocked and surprised. He asked me:" why did you bow before me sir?? I am such a godforsaken person. The scum."
I told him" I should not miss God this way if I ever met him. For I know that God may come only this way to test me. And what if he comes to meet me this unpleasent way , at least i will not miss paying my obesience to him"
He told me "sahab You are different." I could see the gratuitious smile on his face while he went to another car for the alm.
I bowed before him again.
We should all respect the underprivileged. For all human beings are basically equal. It is travesty of circumstances that we meet them as beggars.
Every human being craves for self respect. If you give him food he will be happy but if you give him self respect , he values it more than his hunger. We should remember this truth if possible.
